Canopy and understory nitrogen addition have different effects on fine root dynamics in a temperate forest: implications for soil carbon storage

چکیده

Elucidating the effects of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on fine root dynamics and potential underlying mechanisms is required to understand changes in belowground aboveground carbon storage. However, research these forests has mostly involved direct understory addition N ignored canopy interception processing N. Here, we conducted a field experiment comparing (CAN) with those (UAN) at three N-addition rates (0, 25 50 kg ha–1 yr–1) temperate deciduous forest. Fine production biomass were significantly higher CAN than UAN. At same rate, increases least two-fold greater high rate relative control, was increased by (by 23.5%) but decreased UAN 12.2%). Our results indicate that traditional may underestimate responses forest ecosystems. Canopy processes should be considered for more realistic assessments forests.

Canopy Tree–soil Interactions within Temperate Forests: Species Effects on Soil Carbon and Nitrogen

In a northwestern Connecticut forest, we quantified the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content of the forest floor and the top 15 cm of mineral soil and the rate of midsummer net N mineralization beneath six different tree species. There were large interspecific differences in forest floor depth and mass, in the size and distribution of C and N pools at varying soil depths, and in rates of midsumm...

Fire effects on temperate forest soil C and N storage.

Temperate forest soils store globally significant amounts of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Understanding how soil pools of these two elements change in response to disturbance and management is critical to maintaining ecosystem services such as forest productivity, greenhouse gas mitigation, and water resource protection. Fire is one of the principal disturbances acting on forest soil C and N st...

Forest Management Effects on Surface Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Jennifer

Changes in surface soil C and N can resuh from forest management practices and may provide an index of impacts on long-term site productivity. Soil C and N were measured over time for five watersheds in the southern Appalachians: two aggrading hardwood forests, one southand one north-facing, undisturbed since the 1920s; a white pine (Pinus strobus L.) plantation planted in 1956; and two regener...

Effects of Increased Summer Precipitation and Nitrogen Addition on Root Decomposition in a Temperate Desert

BACKGROUND Climate change scenarios that include precipitation shifts and nitrogen (N) deposition are impacting carbon (C) budgets in arid ecosystems. Roots constitute an important part of the C cycle, but it is still unclear which factors control root mass loss and nutrient release in arid lands. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Litterbags were used to investigate the decomposition rate and nu...

Effects of previous nitrogen addition on chlorine in forest soil, soil solution and biomass

There is increasing evidence that forests and forest soil contribute to the signature of chlorine composition in water bodies. However, little is known about the potential effects of land management activities on chlorine biogeochemistry. This study examines the effects of previous nitrogen addition on chlorine chemistry in a Pinus sylvestris (L.) forest located in south-central Sweden (60°00 ...
